Sandy Spring Bank’s beginnings are humble but mighty. In 1868, 26 Quaker farmers gathered to create the Savings Institution of Sandy Spring. Each founder contributed $3.50 to purchase office supplies and by the end of the first day they had $383 in deposits. Our employee numbers and deposits have grown since then, but what remains the same is our commitment to the people we serve.
Just as the Greater Washington, D.C. metro area has changed in ways no one could have predicted in the 1860s, the same holds true for Sandy Spring Bank. We kept pace and adapted as the needs of our clients evolved, from expanding services and products to financing important civic projects.
In 1918, bank directors helped Sherwood Academy become the area's first public high school. Additionally, Sandy Spring Bank donated $100 to start support for a community hospital, known today as MedStar Montgomery. Proving that we stay true to our commitments, more recently Sandy Spring Bank announced a $250,000 philanthropic gift to expand cancer care services at that very same medical center.
Every generation has been faced with unique challenges and opportunities, but Sandy Spring Bank meets those challenges, keeping our community in mind first. It is this holistic view of business that has enabled us to thrive over the last 155 years.
We are grateful to our clients, employees and our communities for their unwavering support and faith in our work and the region we call home.
